Absinthe wormwood, or by its Latin name- Artemisia absinthium, is one of a few species of the wormwood plant, and is commonly used to treat stomach pains or to flavor or spice some foods and alchoholic drinks such as absinthe.

Common Names:
Artemisia absinthium, absinthium, absinthe wormwood, wormwood, common wormwood, or grand wormwood.

Areas Found:
Native to the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa.

Active Ingredients:
Silica, absinthine and anabsinthine (bitterness), thujone, tannic and resinous substances, malic acid, and succinic acid.


Medicinal/Therapeutic uses:

  • General —Used as an antiseptic and an antipyretic (fever reducer).
  • Extract — Essential oil is used as cardiac stimulant to improve blood circulation (oil obtained using steam distillation).
  • Tonic — Physical rejuvenation
  • Tincture — Using a mixture of ….
  • Insecticide — Contained within the leaves and effect is natural excreted. Cut, then mince and mix with alcohol (vodka), then shake. Once absorbed, strain plant material, then create an alcohol-water solution as desired. Can be mixed with a catnip solution.

Plant Parts Used:

  • The leaves and flowering tops of the plant.

Planting Instructions:
Planting depth is 1/4″ deep. Use medium-weight, nitrogen-rich soil. Be sure to slightly pack the soil after planting, then immediately water.
